Charging cost swings by a factor of ten depending on where the electrons come from. A cheap overnight utility rate is the cheapest fuel in the country; a road-trip DC fast charger costs more per mile than gasoline in a hybrid. Set your mix here.
Pick the gas car you'd otherwise buy. Both vehicles get taxed, titled, tagged, insured, fuelled and maintained under the same assumptions — the only differences are the ones that are actually different.
Neither column includes depreciation, financing interest, home-charger installation (typically $500–$2,000 for a 240V circuit, minus any utility rebate), parking, tolls or tickets. Depreciation is the largest single cost of owning any new car and it varies more by model than anything on this page — treat these totals as the operating comparison, not the whole picture. The EV also carries a battery-replacement tail risk outside the federally mandated 8-year/100,000-mile pack warranty; the gas car carries an engine and transmission tail risk of its own.

On the numbers. MSRP is the base trim before destination, options and dealer fees; Tesla figures include destination. EPA range runs base trim to best-available trim. Battery is the usable pack in the longest-range trim, so "fill at home" is a full empty-to-full charge of that pack — base trims carry smaller packs and cost proportionally less to fill. Efficiency is derived as range ÷ usable battery (pack-out miles), and the cost math then adds a 10% AC charging loss at home and 5% at DC, which is why wall-measured EPA MPGe figures look slightly lower. Real-world range drops 10–20% in cold weather or at sustained interstate speeds. Sources disagree by a few thousand dollars on some prices — confirm with the configurator before you buy.
The biggest lever on EV running cost is the rate plan, not the car. Georgia Power's Overnight Advantage prices energy at 2.2¢ between 11pm and 7am — and 29.8¢ on summer weekday afternoons. Those are base energy rates before riders and fuel cost recovery, which add roughly 35–45%. Most utilities in most states offer some version of this trade; it is worth an hour on your utility's rate page.

Georgia Power all-in figures add an estimated 40% to published base energy rates for riders and fuel cost recovery. State averages are EIA-derived residential figures for May 2026 and already include everything on the bill. Serenbe and parts of south Fulton sit in Coweta-Fayette EMC territory rather than Georgia Power — if that's your meter, check the co-op's own schedule. Five states (Iowa, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Wyoming) already levy a per-kWh tax at public chargers, and Georgia joins them Jan 1, 2027.
